Hall of Fame ()

For the second consecutive year Phil was been asked to adorn the cover pages of Classic FM's 'Hall of Fame' issue. If that wasn't enough further drawings can be seen decorating the Hall of fame countdown plus Phil's depiction of Malcolm Arnold's The Padstow Lifeboat on the back pages.

Impeccable taste! ()

Appears my G2 cover last week struck a cord with one of it's subjects Mr Andrew Rawnsley, who has requested a copy for himself. A man of impeccable taste I might add!

Phil's Wry Society ()

Bored Fashion Director

For 15 years, ‘How to Spend It’, the FT's multi-award-winning magazine, has been celebrating beauty and style with sumptuous images and insightful features. For the last 12 of those years Phil Disley has been illustrating the column 'Wry Society'. 'Wry Society' takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the world of the privileged and well-heeled, covering topics from plastic surgery and fashion to private schools and shooting parties. Voted Colour Supplement of the Year at The 2006 Newspaper Awards again by a big margin for the seventh time, two years ago ‘How To Spend It’ made publishing history by swooping all three major industry awards – The British Press Awards 2004, The British Society of Magazine Editors 2004 and The 2004 Newspaper Awards – something no other colour supplement has achieved. Editor Gillian de Bono says: "With his wicked, witty and deliciously funny caricatures, Phil Disley lays bare the unseemly underbelly of modern society. He truly is the Ralph Steadman of his generation."

In 2009 HTSI launched it's online version where a library of Phil's images can be seen

Large boots to fill! ()

Security CrackdownOver Christmas Phil was given the privilege of standing in for Steve Bell of 'The Guardian' between Christmas and New Year! Steve Bell is a real cartooning heavy-weight of legendary status and has been drawing in The Guardian for over thirty years. Phil himself has been working on the newspaper for over a decade, initially illustrating Jim White's column on the sports section, and then as a cover artist for their Review and G2 sections. Over the last five years Phil has been a regular contributor to the Comment and Debate sections.

Phil said, "It was a real honour to stand in for Mr Bell over the Christmas period. I really enjoyed it although it was a little daunting as they are rather large boots to fill! The drawings ran over three days and involved scouring the papers each morning for ideas, getting roughs over by mid-day, then delivering final art work by email no later than 7pm each evening. I'm used to tight deadlines and really enjoyed the freedom that this type of work allows. You pick the topic and treat it as you see fit-there aren't many publications that will allow you to focus on the President and PM's bottoms, although they did omit my title caption 'Security Crackdown'! On the whole I think it went pretty well and I haven't been as excited to see my work in print for a long time."

Black Book ()

Last year the US Creative Community was asked to select their two most favorite illustrators in 2008 Black Book Illustration. We calculated the results and asked the illustrators who received the most votes to submit a concept cover for 2009 Black Book Illustration and bring their own style and interpretation to the project. The only parameter the illustrators were given was: the theme of the book is "Find the Missing Piece".

Why John Hurt?

Phil's image 'Why John Hurt?' was one of three runners up.

"The distorted figure on the front cover, when viewed in isolation, is unrecognizable although evidently human. Ironically, his twisted features and upturned mouth form a prominent smile masking the hurt within. Clues both in the title and the circus typography hint to Merrick's freak show origins. Cage bars form a back drop, whilst the jigsaw border gives a feeling of claustrophobia and symbolizes entrapment and exploitation. When front, back and spine are viewed, the elephant elements become apparent along with what I now know as the most famous quote from the film,"I am not an animal, I am a human being."To contradict this famous quote, I've depicted the masses as laughing hyenas. The church represents the view from Merrick's hospital window-the subject matter for his model which he completes on his death bed. The missing piece of the puzzle is the key to the whole film and relates to Merrick being wrongly labeled as an imbecile.

Hope ()

HopeFollowing its publication in The Guardian on 14 January 2009 we are delighted that the artist, Phil Disley, has created a limited edition signed print of his cartoon depicting Barack Obama as Watts's Hope. The print is in an edition of 500 numbered copies, each hand signed and titled by the artist and blind stamped with the Watts Gallery Limited Edition mark. In the spirit of 'art for all' and the history of large edition prints of Hope the artist has generously agreed to make the edition just £25. All proceeds from the print will benefit the Watts Gallery Hope Appeal. The print is both a celebration of the importance of Watts's painting and a capturing of the historic moment of Barack Obama becoming President of the United States of America. The link between Obama and Watts's painting Hope has now been covered by every broadsheet newspaper in England as well as the television networks Al Jazeera and Bloomberg. The print is sure to sell quickly so you are encouraged to act quickly. To buy a print please visit the Watts gallery http://www.wattsgallery.org.uk
