Large boots to fill!
Over Christmas Phil was given the privilege of standing in for Steve Bell of 'The Guardian' between Christmas and New Year! Steve Bell is a real cartooning heavy-weight of legendary status and has been drawing in The Guardian for over thirty years. Phil himself has been working on the newspaper for over a decade, initially illustrating Jim White's column on the sports section, and then as a cover artist for their Review and G2 sections. Over the last five years Phil has been a regular contributor to the Comment and Debate sections.
Phil said, "It was a real honour to stand in for Mr Bell over the Christmas period. I really enjoyed it although it was a little daunting as they are rather large boots to fill! The drawings ran over three days and involved scouring the papers each morning for ideas, getting roughs over by mid-day, then delivering final art work by email no later than 7pm each evening. I'm used to tight deadlines and really enjoyed the freedom that this type of work allows. You pick the topic and treat it as you see fit-there aren't many publications that will allow you to focus on the President and PM's bottoms, although they did omit my title caption 'Security Crackdown'! On the whole I think it went pretty well and I haven't been as excited to see my work in print for a long time."
